The CAPPED Giving Tree . . .
For People who "CAN GIVE" and "Feel Good About Giving . . ."

Your monthly contribution, "In Honor of . . .", "In Memory of . . .", "In Recognition of . . ." or just to advertise your business or organization helps stabalize the funding supporting CAPPED.  You see, we don't have a big parent organization to lean on when the economy dips . . . like NOW!  We don't have that cushion that the big non-profits enjoy.

In the beginning of CAPPED, we were receiving grants for 3 of 5 proposals written.  Since the stock market started hick-up-ing and the interest rates have stayed so low, the foundations (who grant on interest earned from principle) have not had the "grantable income" necessary to fund programs like they did before 2006.  Therefore grants are much smaller and there is a greater competition for every one.  Writing proposals for grants takes a lot of time and patience and are best done by a group within the organization.  In the past 5 years we have written many valid, well thought out proposals and have only received minimal funding on a very few.  In talking with grantors, they are working to save the biger and older organizations now.  It has become very clear that to survive, we must find other avenues for support.

So, we started with cutbacks, in 2009, we reduced our hours to half days.  It was a great blow to our staff and volunteers.  We all knew that people would be coming to our door for help . . . and they would find it locked.  We also know that cancer patients often don't have the stamina to make the effort twice.  We were all miserable, so we had to find a better answer.

Then, we had a brainstorming session and broke it down to the smallest denominators.  We discovered that we don't need huge grants, we need monthly income to pay monthly bills.  This made it a little more manageable.  It meant we needed multiple donors, each giving what they could on a monthly basis.  This would act to stabalize our income so we would never again face the possibility of our doors closing because a grant did not come through.  No more hanging our future on the decision of grantmakers who were also struggling with difficult decisions.

Today, we are still working to fill the CAPPED Giving Tree:

“Sustaining Angel” monthly gifts inspire our volunteers and staff . . . and help provide the stability CAPPED needs to develop and maintain innovative programs and services that cut to the heart of the need . . . “The Primary Prevention of Disease.”

There is a big difference between being a "Winner", never having to go through diagnostic tests or treatments and being a "Survivor" with all the emotional trauma, pain and suffering that patients and families endure.

"I want my children and grandchildren to be "WINNERS" because they have never had to hear the words . . . "You have cancer."

                            I am sure you do too!

We purchased 2 sheets of 4 ' x 8 ' 3/4" plywood, sanded, ripped, primed, and began painting.  The photo slide show below tells most of the story.
